LINEAGE | WHAT IS LINEAGE?

Lineage is the transmission of a living energy from teacher to student. Lineages exist in many traditions, notably martial arts, healing arts and spirituality. The lineage represents an unbroken chain through which accumulated knowledge is passed from generation to generation.

A spiritual teacher is someone who, in almost every instance, has been the student of a real guru. As students, they have spent years ardently studying and practicing the techniques and methods transmitted by their gurus. They have carefully cultivated to a one-pointed focus a deep understanding of the highest power that dwells within. If such a person comes from a lineage and represents a respected tradition, then we have assurance that they have been well trained and are teaching from their genuine experience. Furthermore, if such a person has been empowered to teach by a guru, then it is because they have been recognized by their predecessors and peers to possess a profound inner gift.

The tradition of Trika Yoga practiced at The Movement Center places great emphasis on the role of the teacher in promoting spiritual growth. An authentic spiritual teacher is a person who has become established in the infinite nature of their individual awareness. The authentic teacher demonstrates continuously, and in every connection, the great creative power of spirit. An effective teacher is also a great student-one who is committed to extending their contact with, and capacity for access to, this creative energy of Life.

The role of the authentic teacher is basically two-fold: first, to arouse the deepest creative power of Life present within us; then, to support us as this power unfolds. The teacher is a well from which we draw a clear, pure vitality which facilitates our process of transformation. As this process unfolds, the creative power of Life makes us aware of the intimate relationship of all spirit and matter, and the oneness of all spirit.

The current teacher in The Movement Center lineage is Swami Chetanananda, who was born and raised in the United States and has devoted his life to exploring the essence of authentic spirituality. Swami Chetanananda was a student of Swami Rudrananda (Rudi), who lived in New York City and passed away in 1973. The Movement Center lineage also includes Bhagavan Nityananda of Ganeshpuri, India, Rudi's teacher and one of the greatest yogis of the 20th century. We have also received teachings and transmissions from Lama Tsering Wangdu Rinpoche, a highly accomplished practitioner in the Nyingma school of Vajrayana Buddhism.
