NEWS | USTAD MASHKOOR ALI KHAN IN CONCERT

A Rare Appearance by an Extraordinary Vocalist on July 6

Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan

We're pleased to host Hindustani vocalist Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan for a concert on his second trip to Portland. Mashkoor Khan was born into of one of the most illustrious family lines in the history of North Indian classical music. A direct descendant of the family of the great Ustad Abdul Karim Khan and Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan, who were the founders of the famous Kirana lineage, he was trained for 15 years by his father, the sarangi master, Padmashree Ustad Shakoor Khan. As such he has inherited a veritable treasure of compositions and an almost unparalleled knowledge of ragas.

Mashkoor Khan has devoted his life to uphold and continue the legacy of this deep musical and spiritual tradition. His singing uniquely evokes the character of each raga, mesmerizing the listener with his power and virtuosity. He has performed in almost all of the major music festivals and conferences of classical music all over India. His career is studded with numerous titles and awards. Mashkoor Khan is currently a senior vocal guru with the Sangeet Research Academy (Institute of Hindustani classical vocals and music, Kolkata, India), and at the American Academy of Indian Classical Music in New York City, nurturing new generations of musicians under his wings.
